Unity Overcoming Division
“We were born to work together like feet, hands, and eyes... To obstruct each other is unnatural”
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
The amount of perfection that it takes for our bodies to function the way they do is unimaginable. And yet it is the way it is. However, our bodies all stop functioning eventually, so tell me this: Is harmony inevitably bound to corrupt, or is it possible for it to be eternal?
Our body works in a way that seems to be mirrored all around our world. Even as far into detail as the cells that make up what make us up. Those all function cooperatively to reach a common goal. I like to call this idea the scale effect. When you zoom out, or look at the larger scale of something, every entity is a constituent piece of a greater whole. Our cells make up our parts, our parts make up our bodies, and so on. So if our bodies make up the earth’s human population, isn’t it our job to work towards making it better? And if so, don’t we all as humans share that same common goal? So why do we work against each other then, when working in unison will help us reach that goal?
Contradicting this thought, however, is the idea that having a common job takes away from our own personal existence as a conscious being. For whatever reason you may say that we have consciousness, it still gives us the wanting to be unique and our own, in any certain way. I can quickly shut this down by saying this: We can all find an idiosyncrasy, inspired by whatever our unique, conscious minds desire. This not only makes a perfect harmony of working together, but it gives us a sense of purpose. A sense that we can support what others do, while they support what we do, creating a state of equilibrium.
So to conclude this idea, I would like to put a final thought at the table. Peace is an equilibrium between harmony and individuality. Harmony gives people the ability to work for a common goal, and find a balance between contradictions in opinion. On the other hand, individuality is finding your own personal meaning and purpose in your life, balancing emotions and logic. When we master both sides of things, that is an equilibrium that makes peace in our lives. Thank you for reading Social Science 43, and have a peaceful day.
